Innovation & Achievements

CEQ’s genuine commitment to the advancement of local people is no more evident than in the recent opportunity for 4 managers to work in a progressive mainland store. The managers were exposed to business and store management practices in a leading IGA store.

The development and implementation of sound business practices in an ethical, culturally appropriate and socially responsible manner has enabled CEQ to move into a new age of business adopting a strategic corporate approach to its core business in order to ensure future growth led by local indigenous people.

The Managers were encouraged and mentored and coached to apply innovative practices in their respective stores.

CEQ was awarded Winner in the HRD Leadership Award 2016 and a finalist in the HR National Awards of 2016. The HRD awards are the result of an annual staff survey undertaken within the organisation by the HRD team.

CEQ has been awarded Winner in the Reward and Recognition category of the HRD Employer of Choice for 2017.

Key Factors of Success

An introduce of Island Time IBIS Time slogan has been instrumental in the creation of an overarching culture where every culture is respected. The belief in acceptance of all cultures, together with the tools that explain the WHY in practices, was the foundation for trust and support and where Store Managers demonstrated their management ability.

  • The Indigenous Management Model sees local people managing the local food stores.
  • Fundamental Retail Training Manual tool developed to explain the rationale behind the need for compliance in food, safety and retail practices.
  • Focus on staff retention – local people are comfortable to work with families and work alongside local community members.
  • CEQ’s genuine commitment to developing local people.
  • Career path with training, mentoring and coaching.
  • Allowing the voice of community to be head.
  • Development plan linking to a Succession Plan.
  • Ensuring diverse range of products in stores.

Cultural Protocols.

Cultural Awareness is the ability to recognise, understand, accept and respect the different beliefs, values and customs that someone has, based on that person’s origins, and it allows us to build more successful personal and professional relationships in a diverse environment.

Cultural Awareness is what guides our behaviour in particular situations and paves the way for CEQ to develop and maintain positive relationships within the community.
